Obit: Robin Cowling (S:1955-62)

We are sad to hear of the passing of Robin James Cowling, S: 1955-62.

Robin (born 24 March 1944) was an English rugby union player who won 8 caps for England between 1977 and 1979. He played 216 games for Gloucester Rugby between 1967 and 1974 before playing 184 times for Leicester Tigers between 1974 and his retirement in 1981.

Cowling was born in Suffolk, but moved to Somerset as a baby. His grandfather was a former captain of Gloucester Rugby and his uncle was John A'Bear, who toured with the British Lions in 1936.

Most recently, Robin coached for the Exeter Chiefs from 1997 until his death in 2026, apart from two years with Cornish Pirates. He has been noted for his contribution to Exeter Chief's success as team manager and talent scout. A tribute to Robin can be read on the Exeter Chief's website, here.

Before his death, Robin had been in touch with the Sports teams here at Sidcot and his story is on the wall of the Sports Centre to inspire future generations (seen pictured). He credited his many sports teachers for encouraging him to develop his sporting skillset: Keith Gale, then Head of Sport, Stuart Linney, his Cricket Coach and Aubrey Hopes, his "rugby-mad" teacher. He was pleased to receive his rugby colours in the Fifth Form at Sidcot.

Our sincere condolences are with Robin's family and friends.
