We look forward to welcoming you all to the Easter Reunion Weekend 2026. The final schedule will be shared nearer to the event.
Easter talk speaker: Andrew Duguid
Andrew’s family emigrated to Canada in 1951. Then in 1959, for job-related reasons, they unexpectedly returned to Britain. Andrew and his brother James came to Sidcot, mainly because their uncle taught history there. They both grew very attached to the School, and James was later joined there by their younger brother, Winston. Both James and Winston were Head Boys in their day, but Andrew was regarded as a bit of a rebel. Andrew studied Economics at the London School of Economics, where he met his future wife, Janet. He gained an MA in Marketing at Lancaster University, and moved back to London.
After several years in advertising and market research, he entered the Civil Service, where he worked for 14 years, including 3 years on secondment to the No 10 Policy Unit, run by John Hoskyns, a businessman and strategist, reporting to the new Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. Andrew’s biggest project there was the reform of trade union law. In 1986 he left the civil service to work at Lloyd’s of London, an insurance marketplace, to supervise a programme of regulatory reform. Later, as Director for Strategic Planning, he played a key role in the 1996 financial reconstruction of Lloyd’s, about which he has published a book entitled On The Brink. In 2001, Andrew joined the newly formed Global Aerospace, the world’s largest aviation insurer, where his main role was to ensure the integration of the US and UK sides of the business.
After retiring from full-time work in 2005, he was a trustee of the Sir John Cass Foundation, a non- executive director of Hammersmith NHS Primary Care Trust and the initial chairman of Central London Community Healthcare. Nowadays he remains Chairman of the trustees of the London School of Osteopathy and President of his local tennis club. Andrew and Janet live in Hammersmith, London. He still enjoys walking - a habit acquired at Sidcot - skiing, tennis and the company of his family including two sons, one daughter and seven grandchildren. He continues a lifelong interest in politics and government, and chairs the Political Committee of the Reform Club. He remains in close touch with several Sidcotians. During lockdown around ten of us held regular Zoom sessions to help maintain our sanity.
